Hi, I’m Bethany Velarde!
I’m a senior majoring in International Relations with an Asian Studies theme at Agnes Scott College.
My first love is creating in any form. During the pandemic, I’ve been sharing my art on Instagram, writing blog posts, plays and poetry, and testing out recipes when I’m not studying. These creative activities fuel my academic and professional work. On this portfolio, you can find a few examples of this in my photographs and collages, videos I made documenting my journey to Iceland, and essays examining current events topics like globalization and social media, all from my three years at Agnes Scott.
My second love is travel, and so far I’ve studied in Iceland and China while at Agnes Scott. As we moved to online learning in March 2020, I’ve been making and sharing videos about these and more current adventures on Youtube. Travelling and making friends across cultures is an essential part of who I am, being multicultural myself and having grown up across four countries. Before coming to Atlanta, I moved 12 times in the U.S., Mexico, Gemany and the Netherlands, where I graduated high school. This is reflected in my IR major, and projects about about the Benghazi attack, the war in Afghanistan, and between the U.S. and China. Much of my projects have focused on the Middle East and Asia through my Asian Studies thematic group.
My third love is making projects happen. I’ve been in soccer teams as a captain and a community volunteer in high school, worked as a nanny and office clerk during my gap year, and created a brand through graphic designs as a public relations chair. No matter where I work, my sweet spot is in getting people with diverse viewpoints to work together on projects, and then managing and strategizing next steps. Right now my focus is in improving my research and analytical skills through as a lead researcher in a psychology lab and Python programming course, respectively, but I am also aiming to help establish a non-profit in the sustainability space by 2021.
